Our Pastor

Pastor Travis Sturgill is an anointed preacher, gifted teacher, author, counselor, and life coach, and is passionate in the fulfillment of the pastoral call on his life. His message, while filled with detailed Scriptural analysis and exposition, is always focused on practical application to our lives today.  Pastor Travis is in place at this precise time in Esserville’s rich 60 year history, and he humbly carries the torch of the past, while boldly challenging the congregation and community to commit to change that will impact lives for the Kingdom.

A staunch opponent of legalism, Pastor Travis has been seen by some as a rebel against the institutional norms, a designation with which he is comfortable due to his belief that religion leads to bondage, while a relationship with God is the path to freedom. With a firm commitment to the message of the Bible, Pastor Travis has an equally firm commitment to changing methods of the presentation of that message in order to reach the most people for the cause of Christ. When asked to describe our pastor, one of Travis’ colleagues describes him as having “a heart of gold; a mind of steel; and a back bone of iron.” We’re confident that you will find in our pastor, a person who loves God and loves you; a compassionate counselor and friend; a person dedicated to accurate interpretation of Scripture and the teaching thereof; and an ally that will stand on truth and vision even when those may not be politically correct or popular. Above all, you’ll soon discover that Pastor Travis is a servant – he cherishes the privilege to serve the Sovereign God of the Universe, and serve people, the crowning jewel of that creation.

A native of Wise, Virginia, Pastor Travis Sturgill received his Bachelor Degree in Government and Public Administration with a Minor in Philosophy from the University of Virginia’s College at Wise, and completed graduate studies at T.C. Williams School of Law, the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and Liberty University.

Pastor Travis and his wife, Amanda, are the proud parents of three children: Nick, Morganne, and Eden. The couple is actively involved in the activities of their children, as well as the activities of the youth within the church and community.

Both his in depth business experience and his spiritual training have been factors in the leadership effectiveness of Pastor Travis, though he is very quick to point out that this success truly belongs to God. He often reminds us that “we are all misfits, but God loves us anyway, and I am the chief misfit.” He believes, whole heartedly, that Esserville Church is the perfect church for people who aren’t! His door, phone, email, and ear are always open to you, and he welcomes you to contact him.
